Brainspotting
Brainspotting (BSP) is a trauma informed neuroexperiential technique originally discovered by David Grand while facilitating a modified EMDR protocol, utilizing bilateral sounds while visually focusing on an activation point. BSP accesses subcortical areas of the brain while allowing somatic (body) focus and processing. The therapeutic relationship is essential in this modality due to the focused attunement by the clinician to the client’s process during a session. It is a technique within the clinical relationship that allows neurobiological location, focus, processing, and release of stuck experiences and distressing symptoms, many of which have felt stuck because they are out of reach to process cognitively through talk therapy. BSP works with deep brain regions and the body through its direct access to the autonomic and limbic systems within the body’s central nervous system.
